What is the role of the board in advocacy?

Board members are ambassadors for their organisation and play a crucial role in advocating to support its mission. For governance, advocacy and fundraising purposes board members need to attend as many events as possible and be kept informed:

  • Get dates of activities into board members’ diaries as early as possible, supplying them with information about the event and who will be there.
  • Provide board members with a menu of specific ways in which they can support advocacy and fundraising efforts to suit their skills.
  • Ensure board members have clear messages.
  • Consider board training in “making the ask”.
