This course has been developed from NCVO’s governance work with a variety of charities over many years. It encompasses all we’ve learnt to ensure trustees make an effective contribution to the governance of their organisation, as well as create and maintain good relationships with staff.
OUTCOMES
By the end of the day you will have:
- considered how achieve the right mix of skills and diversity on your board
- identified key areas of good practice in board recruitment and review
- discussed how to deal with challenging board members and conflict
- examined how to engender team working on a board yet maintain individual independence of mind for effective decision making
- considered how to develop and retain existing board members
- examined the importance of succession planning
- considered how to build an effective working relationship between the board and CEO/senior management team.
- explore approaches to board appraisal and review
- understood the role of the chair and vice chair in supporting effective governance
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Trustees, chairs, senior staff and those with a role to play in the development of an effective board and good governance such as CEOs. This course has an emphasis on the practical application of the above elements.

WHO RUNS IT?
Dan Francis leads NCVO’s work on governance. He has considerable experience supporting organisational development and leadership of charities of all sizes from across the sector. Dan sits as a member of the charity governance code steering group and has been heavily involved in authoring the most recent edition of the code. Dan’s background is from the youth and education sector having joined NCVO from the National Union of Students, where as a consultant, he supported the development of students’ unions. Dan has experience of interim senior management assignments in the voluntary sector and has served as a trustee for small and medium sized community and education charities.
