What is the role of the treasurer?

  • It is important that each Board has at least one financially skilled member with specific, delegated responsibility for the financial oversight and management of the organisation and this person usually chairs a Finance sub-committee. 
  • A Treasurer will often delegate the day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, and banking tasks to paid staff (e.g. Finance Manager) or to other volunteers. The Treasurer’s role remains one of governance and oversight, not necessarily routine transaction processing.
